Interesting idea - a bit reminiscent of the Babylon 5 episode The Deconstruction of Falling Stars where we saw the ultimate evolution of the human race as energy beings that occasionally put on physical bodies.

That was, in fact, one of the ideas in the back of my mind. I was also thinking of some Arthur C. Clarke - I'm not going to look up the title at the moment but he had a story where humans were capable of the next step in evolution (becoming star children or such) and were being watched over and helped by a race that knew they couldn't take that next step.

The Clarke story was Childhood's End. The opening of which was fairly blatantly stolen for the TV series "V"

That was very sad. Cry  I think I would have chosen to stay on Earth and die instead of going thru the portal.
