Great chapter, you've really got me hooked. I must admit I was a bit wary at first of the way you skipped around the different times, past and present, but now I’m really enjoying it. It’s strange to already know how things turn out but I want to see how they get there.

And I’m still insanely curious about how much Samantha knows. I mean if she doesn't and finds out her family's been keeping something like this from her that's therapy waiting to happen.

Thank you - I've always felt Sam's relationship with his daughters was never as well explored as it might be - DC canon is that Sam was bitterly disappointed that he didn't father boys, tried to turn Lois into the son he didn't have and it backfired - she ran off to do her own thing and it never included him.

I wanted him to be more complex than that - that he did respect, and was proud of, the woman Lois had become, even if he didn't agree with her choices. He just was never able to tell her that.

And little Sam does know a lot  more than her parents realize.  Smiley

It's both unusual and refreshing to see such a cordial, civil Sam - fully three-dimensional.  You captured it well.

Can't wait to learn what 'little Sam' has figured out.

Oddly enough, I see a lot of echoes (both in Canon Gen. Lane and Poison Gen. Lane) between Sam Lane and Marvel's General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross.

Both are "old war-horse" characters, both have daughters they wish had been sons, and both feel that the men they've attached themselves to (Superman/Clark Kent and the Hulk/Bruce Banner) are weak and spineless by dint of not being military men.

(And, of course, both son-in-laws could utterly destroy the precious multi-million dollar war toys that the two generals hold in such dear regard without even trying hard, if they so wanted to.)

I will say this, your General Lane is certainly acting better than his present comic-book counterpart at present...

Wow I'm slow, I only just realised who she's named after  :Smiley. And, I'm just making a blind guess, but you said more than her parents realise, what about her brother?

I love the way your General is written. It was spot on for a man dealing with end of life issues.
